VW Golf Alltrack – the all-weather warrior

VW Golf Alltrack – the all-weather warrior

When Skoda and SEAT launched more rugged 4-wheel drive versions of their Octavia and Leon estates, VW was nowhere to be seen. Conspicuously so.

But not for long. Because now the Octavia Scout and the Leon X-perience face a new challenger: the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.

Considered in some circles the ultimate all-weather warrior, the new Golf Alltrack – which is in essence a taller Golf Estate - offers an exceptionally comfortable ride, even at high speeds. The beautiful cushioning makes veritable mincemeat of long motorway miles.

And, you can feel confident in reaching your destination no matter what slippery conditions the winter chill throws in your direction, thanks in no small part to the four-wheel-drive system which offers extra grip, particularly reassuring at this time of year. The suspension of the Alltrack is up by 20mm, ensuring it is totally unfazed with the occasional off-road excursion.

When it comes to ticking the boxes, it does this and then some. In fact, the only reason not to buy one is that a Skoda Octavia Scout of similar spec costs around £2,750 less.

The Golf Alltrack comes with protective body cladding and a choice of three diesel engines: a 1.6 and two 2.0-litres; as well as an option of either manual or automatic gearboxes.

In terms of fuel economy, it isn’t the best. Compared to the regular front-wheel-drive Golf Estate, the all-wheel-drive system bumps CO2 emissions up from 108g/km to 125g/km, while fuel economy drops from 67.3mpg to 58.9mpg.

In practical terms, the Alltrack provides all the space and versatility of the standard Golf Estate. This equates to a sizeable 605-litre boot that expands to 1,620 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. There’s bags of room in the back, too, and as with all VWs, the driving position is spot-on.
