The new Audi R8 Plus might not have the style and flamboyance of its predecesor, but as modern supercars go, it ain’t too bad at all. Let’s face it, how many supercars can function in the 9-5 routine of a typical working week… but still have a sparkle and fizz come the weekend. It’s a formidable combination.
But are there any issues with it? Well yes, it’s very good but maybe not quite in the same league as the original R8 which let’s be honest was an utter triumph. It was a mechanical masterpiece, a product of love and craftsmanship. A natural-born sports car. Top of its game.
The latest offering, whilst resplendent, cannot realistically lay claim to being one of the best supercars ever made. Yes it ticks many boxes. For starters, it’s very, very fast. It’s beautiful. It even sounds wonderful.
But there’s something lacking…With Audi’s optional Dynamic Steering system, the synergy between mitt and contact patch is nowhere near as intuitive as we’ve come to expect; more savage in its reflex action. The suspension is clearly working harder than in the model’s previous incarnation, very hard indeed. But there is a pay-off for this, in a somewhat over-zealous restriction of its bodily motions.
The new Audi R8 comes with seven drive modes, including the four stock Audi menu options (Auto, Comfort, Dynamic, Individual) and three additional ‘performance’ ones unique to the R8. You can toggle between these from a switch under the steering wheel, allowing you to choose between Dry, Wet and Snow. Given the quality of the final three alone, it begs the question why Audi actually bothered offering the first four drive options on this model.
Altogether, there’s a lot to like here. Not least the improved 5.2 litre V10 engine (which remains simply epic in its power and glory) as well as the sheer usability of the machine. It’s just so easy a ride. In any conditions. Anywhere.
