Performance:
Buyers can choose from a pair of turbocharged 2.0-litre engines - a 197bhp petrol and a 168bhp diesel. The petrol is rapid and flexible, offering plenty of urge no matter where the rev counter is pointing, while the diesel provides massive shove in the mid-range, but feels flat at low revs.
Ride & handling:
The Freetrack 4 has 40mm of extra ground clearance over the Altea XL, but body movements are still well controlled. The ride is a little on the firm side, although it's a long way from being harsh, and the steering is nicely weighted. In normal conditions, power goes to the front wheels only; when conditions turn slippery, it's sent to all four.
Refinement:
The petrol engine is smooth and refined, but the diesel rattles at idle and sounds rather coarse when worked hard. Some wind noise builds up around the windscreen pillars at motorway speeds, and road noise also intrudes over coarse surfaces. The gearshift is light and precise.
Behind the wheel:
Making yourself comfortable is easy, because the driver's seat is height-adjustable and the steering wheel moves for both reach and rake. The controls are logically placed, but some of the centre console's buttons are a bit fiddly. The small windows between the windscreen and front doors are of little use, while thick rear pillars create blind spots when reversing
Space & practicality:
The Freetrack 4 is based on Seat's Altea XL MPV, so it offers seating for five and a huge boot. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats slide back and forth on runners to help you make the most of the available room, and there's some useful storage space under the boot floor.
Equipment:
