Performance:
The petrols feel lively, but the 115bhp Cooper needs to be revved hard to deliver. For day-to-day driving, there's not much difference in performance between the One and the Cooper. The 1.4-litre common-rail turbodiesel is flexible and punchy, with 88bhp and 140lb ft of muscle.
Ride & handling:
The Mini comes as close as possible to replicating the kart-like feel of the smaller old car. Taut body control and outstanding grip help make it the sharpest handling car in this class. The steering gives you superb accuracy and feel, but is rather heavy around town. The ride is firm, especially with the optional larger alloy wheels
Refinement:
It's a pity the petrol engines need working hard when you're out to have some fun because they get boomy when revved. They are hushed when cruising, however. The diesel is quiet on start-up and is equally hushed on the motorway. There's some road roar on coarse surfaces, but little wind noise despite the upright windscreen.
Behind the wheel:
The chairs hold you in place, and, like the steering column, have height adjustment. Old Mini throwbacks like the round central speedometer, and toggle switches for minor controls take some getting used to, but the dash is simple and everything is within easy reach.
Space & practicality:
The Mini is nominally a four-seater, but that is asking a lot of those sitting in the back. There is ample head- and legroom in the front seats, but access to the rear is poor, the seating position is awkward and legroom is severely limited. The boot is also woefully short of space, with room for just a couple of small bags.
Equipment:
The Mini's premium prices supply lots of safety kit, but cheaper versions miss out on some desirable features. All versions have remote central locking, electric front windows and door mirrors and a CD player, but alloy wheels cost extra for entry-level One models and air-conditioning is a pricey option
