Performance:
There are four engines – 188bhp 2.7- and 268bhp 3.6-litre turbodiesels, plus a 295bhp 4.4-litre V8 petrol and a supercharged 4.2-litre V8 that serves up a whopping 385bhp. The 4.4 is fine in isolation, but it isn’t as punchy as key rivals so getting the best from it requires too much effort. For performance worthy of the Sport tag you need the supercharged unit.
Ride & handling:
The Sport uses an adapted version of the Discovery’s platform, but changes designed to provide a sharper drive don’t go far enough unless you specify the optional Dynamic Response active suspension. This works to counteract body roll, but is only standard on the supercharged car. All Sports are comfortable, however
Refinement:
The Sport makes a good long-distance cruiser. While the bluff shape and big wheels kick up some wind and road noise, engine noise is subdued and the cabin is a quiet place to be. The controls operate smoothly, although the 4.4’s auto ‘box often sits in a higher gear than you’d like, so can be frustrating.
Behind the wheel:
The Sport still has the king-of-the-road driving position that makes the larger Range Rover’s cabin so appealing. There’s a good range of seat and steering wheel adjustment, while all the controls are logically placed. The bulky centre console is angled towards the driver for a sportier feel, but while it’s loaded with switches, it’s easy to use.
Space & practicality:
The Sport seats four in comfort and five at a push. Head- and legroom are in plentiful supply all-round. Short rear doors also impede access to the back seat. The large boot also has the convenience of a separately opening rear screen for smaller items.
Equipment:
All Sports are well equipped, with four electric windows, a CD player, electrically powered seats and climate control. Entry-level S cars have cloth seats and you have to step up to SE to gain leather upholstery, reversing sensors, foglamps and a CD changer. Top-spec HSE and supercharged HST models feature satellite-navigation and metallic paint.
